Magic: tango shoes 2009

IMGP3940 We gather at 2pm in a posh cafè on the corner of Arenales and Libertad. We are Miss 15, Miss 10, Miss 4 and Me (since last week I am Miss 7).

Miss 15 announces,

Sorry everyone, I hope you’re not in a rush because I’ve ordered the Menu of the Day which includes a pudding. I’ve got to EAT! I just know the woman in Comme is going to remember that I never went back for those shoes…  I told her I had to check the colour of my dress… I didn’t know how to say I didn’t want to buy them… she put my name on the box and everything… I’ve not dared go in there since. Oh – my – God!

I say,

Well that’s why we’re going in there ‘juntos’, the four of us together – one of us is bound to buy. Takes the pressure off the others. Right?

The four of us end up sharing two massive lunches, although we don’t get extra plates because it turns out that in upmarket Recoleta, we will have to pay extra for the privilege of sharing. We play pass the plate instead, and the waiter turns a blind eye. We relax in each other’s company and enjoy being girls: our topics of conversation range from whether Argentine men are ‘lazy’ or not, and no, I’m not going to spell that one out nor reveal all, to how many pairs of tango shoes we each actually own: 15, 10, 7 and 4. We rather noisily spill ‘first pair purchase stories’, ‘the death of the first pair’ stories, and ‘the mistakes due to impulsive madness in Comme BsAs’ stories. Afterwards, as we make our way along Arenales towards the almost, but not quite, hidden alleyway that leads to Comme itself, Miss 15 and I pray together that the other punters in the cafè where we ate lunch did not speak English…

From the comfort of the Comme velvet chaise longues and happy in the knowledge that I am spending someone else’s dosh, I confidently select two pairs for Brit girls back in Blighty: one of the pairs I secretly want, and they’re in my size… Well, if she doesn’t like them, I mutter.

Miss 4, who is heading back to England herself next week, buys, with much encouragement from us all and from the boyfriend or husband of another customer – I’d so ask you to dance in those: mad but totally fabulous black and white dalmation toe bar and purple silk heel cage.

Miss 15 buys too, that is once she’s zipped into the stock room to strip off her thick woolly winter tights (in hindsight, perhaps not the best choice for tango shoe shopping): unbelievable classy purple patent leather snakeskin (a thumbs up from me on the easy to clean front). I would have bought them once upon a time, in the days before I sacrificed looks for padding.

Miss 10 gives excellent advice but refrains from trying on a single pair.

The prices aren’t as much of a shock as I expect. Yes the one Special Edition seems to be an outrageous $520pesos but most come in at below $450pesos for cash… yes of course we’re talking top end prices but these are absolutely a tango shoe being sold to tourists, and the fact remains that if you are a tourist then compared to what you can get in Britain at the prices you’d have to pay, these shoes are still not expensive – well, I mean, aside from the minor detail that you had to spend shedloads on your plane ticket to get here in the first place.

From Comme at Arenales 1239, we amble the few blocks to 1606 and Taconeando where none of us have ever been before. As I shoo the chatty chicas across the street and they spot the store, Miss 15 cries,

Oh thank God it’s a proper SHOP with shoes out on display and everything!

I know what she means. The Comme thing of having to describe what you want and then hoping they bring you a decent selection does get a bit wearing. In Taconeando there’s none of that. Within minutes the place is our dressing room, Miss 15(now 16) is peeling off those tights again and we can’t keep our hands off the shoes. They have a simple but funky feel, and one or two styles are different to anything I’ve seen before: I like them and on Miss 4(now 5), Miss 10, and Miss 15(now 16), the vibrant metallic leathers look absolutely bloody fantastic. On me they look ghastly and I am reminded that until you put shoes on yourself, it really is very difficult to know. I sit centre stage, like a mum giving advice to the daughters I might once have had: it’s fun. My ‘daughters’ are delighted to hear the prices too… Sorry, could you repeat that, did you say from $250pesos? My girls’ hands are in their respective wallets faster than you can say Taconeando. And they let us use their loo. Lovely.

As we (now Miss 15(now 17), Miss 10(now 11), Miss 4(now 6) and Me (still Miss 7)) cram into the taxi for El Beso and the early evening milonga we are all clutching prizes with heels. OK, mine aren’t actually mine, but I’m still savouring my DNI treasures from last week and saving myself for a visit to 2×4alpie (home of top end comfort)  on Saturday… a visit I’m making in part for the lovely British boys in my life and indeed for all the tanguero lads who read this blog – watch this space.

3525436021_02fb44ec78_mOh and while I’m on the subject of favourite tango shoes, I’ve this week been back to one other gorgeous store too: at Acuña de Figeroa 1612, the designs are unique and sport flowers; the colours have such depth that I feel I could dive into the shelves and disappear for a very long time; the craftmanship is top notch… it can only be GretaFlora, and I’ve written all about them before here and here.

I mention them again because for all you tangueros in the UK and Europe, I have great news! GretaFlora now have an agent in Blighty – two mates of mine as it happens: Anne and Donna; their gorgeous range of GretaFlora shoes (for both women and men) can find their way to you wherever you are, and can be found right here at AnD Tango. Take a look!

Meanwhile, back in Buenos Aires at El Beso, I dance in my pink DNIs. The sole, which is mostly rubber but with a suede toe area for pivoting – or at least I think it’s suede, works absolutely brilliantly on the wood floor. I feel rock solid on the heels that are slightly lower than I’m used to, and my body relaxes as a result. More than once I sink into my seat in front of the large mirror somewhat breathless from the bliss of being able to dance free from pain in my toe joints: I actually feel my dance has changed, and I like where it has shifted to. So do my partners it seems. They say some nice stuff with their eyes as they pull away at the end of each tango. I love that. And so, I love my shoes even more. I even find I love El Beso, which actually is a bit of a turn up for the books as I’ve often found it to have a slightly dingy feel in the past… oh hell what am I saying? It still has the same feel, but I find myself smiling anyway, and lingering: I am the last of us four girls to leave. I might even go back next week.

Ah, the magic of the right tango shoes when it comes to generating the all important magnetic energy, in the quest for tango bliss.

Do you have a magic pair that work wonders? Oh do tell…

We girlies can talk about shoes til the cows come home. I just retired my first 2 proper Tango shoes to the charity shop. They were free from one of the Tango teachers I used to have classes with. She was giving away about 15 pairs that hadn’t sold just before Xmas as she was getting new stock in. I was lucky that there were 2 pairs in my size.

I am a CiF girl, but am open to suggestions. I think I need more padding than they offer and a sturdier heel.

I love the pink shoes you purchased.

      Hi A(10).
Yes we girlies can can’t we, and why not eh? It’s fun!
There will always be a place in my heart for CiF as they played a huge part in releasing the goddess within me after a rather long (actually possibly life long) sleep…
But oh how the dancer in me who wants to dance all night is enjoying the DNIs, and soon I will report back on the 2×4s too.

When I come back to UK I am gonna be dancing in the DNIs or the 2×4s I think, so as I hope we may run into each other at a London milonga, do feel free to take a look at the shoes – including the soles, as both offer something a little different there. I may also do a comparison post at some point on the three – CiF, DNI and 2×4 but need to dance in the latter two a few more times first!

It’s so strange. I just met up with my English conversation student, who reads my blog, and he said he can see the upbeat energy in me at the moment – he called it ‘Pink Power’. I love that: Pink Power!

Hope your weekend is full of it!

    Sally, What are DNI’s?
I am losing my infatuation with CIF’s (just a little), and looking for glamour and comfort…a lifelong quest in so many ways…sigh…
I’ll bet you are looking forward to being in England. The gardens. We ought to meet up there sometime as I have a big desire to hand out in the lake country as in Beatrix Potter land.

      Hey E.
See the previous post I wrote which has a link to the DNI shoe store: http://sallycatway.com/?p=1689 and there you can see the Dana range of shoes.
DNI is a tango nuevo school here, but they do shoes too (for women and men) and I just bought some last week, because when I put them on it was like they were a part of me, and very comfortable. They do have a different look to the CiFs (bit trendier and a younger vibe maybe) but I am liking it.

Once I was mad for glamour and I didn’t really understand what would happen to my feet if I danced on stone floors night after night in 10 inch stiletto heels and on zero padding – plus all shoes get grubby anyway, or at least mine do because they get so much use… so now I’m caring less about having the latest flashy number and more about being able dance for as long as my soul wants to, without having my wings clipped by pain in my toe joints.
I know others may say that their Commes are comfortable beyond belief, but over time the truth is that mine weren’t: maybe that is a combo of my body and the number of hours I dance. Who knows? But from now on I will be posting my new discoveries. New designers are popping up all the time, and I am prepared to give them a try if the combo of looks and comfort fits the bill – but, I am actually prepared to sacrifice glamour for comfort because I want to be dancing, rather than hobbling, when I’m ninety!

Any questions on shoes, any time, just ask. I’m always fairly near the shoe stores here.

Oh I am looking forward to England, although slightly panicked by all I have to get done before I leave here! I long to take Carlos for walks in English gardens. Oh yes, the Lake District is absolutely beautiful. Perhaps one day we shall walk together by a British lake Elizabeth, and afterwards, I would love to see the pictures you would paint.

Thanks ever so much Sal for the free advertising!! I know how busy you are, so again I really appreciate the time you have taken to include what we are doing in your blog….

Ok, so the shoes are selling fast; in a small Devon town in a financially critical time, this is no mean feat! (no pun intented)!
The shoes are basically speaking for themselves, the girls here have all found a new love – their feet and what they should enclose them in for spectacular comfort and style.
The feedback has been fabulous, most say they had never dreamed that they could find a dance shoe with so much comfort and good looks to boot….. (will those puns ever stop?).
After spending a year in Buenos Aires, basically dancing every night until our feet were in a state almost beyond repair; after searching highways and byways for the ultimate shoe, we chanced upon the new Gretaflora store, where I squealed much more than is appropriate for a grown woman, ooh-ed and wow-ed over the stunning array of fabrics available for custom made shoes…..
And bought myself a pair for my birthday.
An idea formed…..and so here we are in deepest Devon once again, seemingly in the tango shoe business!
We would love to hear from you if you would like to contact us regarding purchasing the shoes; also welcome are any comments from those of you who have bought Gretaflora shoes and what you think about them.
As to the flower jewellery, I will post some pics as soon as I find a swan-like neck to model for me!!
    Happy dancing to all!!!

      Hey Anne

So glad the GretaFlora business goes well. I don’t actually own a pair but sure would be good to try some one day. Maybe next time round for me.
I am now becoming a little obsessed with road testing different designers to see how they measure up… but money is the limiting factor! I just bought my two pairs: DNI and yesterday 2×4alpie. I took them both with me last night and swapped between the two… and at over 10 hours in 3 milongas (Los C, Cachirulo and La Viru) I damn well had to I can tell you: I’m not sure my forty six year old feet can cope with 10 hours solid in any one pair of tango shoes – however comfortable or well crafted!

It was a fab night filled with friends and heavenly dances with many men. Only down point was the fact that La Viruta seem to have changed their medialunas supplier since I was last there for breakfast – NOT the same. Sob! Music after free entry at 3.30am hadn’t changed though: first time I’ve heard La Bruja for months, so C. was happy.

Enjoy the warm in England. It’s damn chilly here.

Ta for the tip on a brand I have not yet personally come across.

Alas the link you left for Tara seems to return an error and no shoes…???
I googled Tara tango shoes tho’ and came up with the same link and the same error, so not quite sure what’s up there. However not to be deterred I found the Tara shoe category on TangoShoeDivas: http://www.tangoshoedivas.com/shoedivas/?cat=5
(Folks, TangoShoeDivas fab blog with lots of tango shoe info. and photos)

Mmmmmm, looking at the photos on the Divas blog, Tara padding and/or platforms interesting… some look quite funky too!
Do you – or anyone else reading this comment – have a pair of Taras, and if so how have you found them for dancing? And what sort of price are they? And, their address in BsAs?

Meanwhile, if anyone can solve the link problem, please repost it here so we can all get the official word on Taras.
      Thanks,

I remember from when I wrote about the Tara shoes that their website is broken if your browser language is German – maybe it’s also broken if it’s any language other than English. Try switching your browser language to English and see what happens. I wear my Taras quite a bit, I can dance for longer in them than other shoes, I like their sexy, non-anorexic appearance, and the platform makes them look higher than they actually are. But they are expensive. Divas do sell them – or did when I last looked.

Yes the browser language needs to be English by the looks of things. At last I can actually see the Tara website and looking forward to exploring it! (though they seem to be supplied from the USA, so not sure I’d buy without being able to try them on)

Thanks again Miss Hedgehog, and for your comments about the shoes. I can’t help being attracted to the idea of platforms… always a 1970s chica at heart!

I suspect what’s happened is that the website was originally designed, and started, on the basis that there would be versions in multiple languages that would display automatically depending on the user’s browser language. So the bit that detects your browser language automatically was done, but then for one reason or another only the English version was ever implemented. So you get your language detected, and then this daft error message that says it failed to open a version of the home page in your language, in this case “Espanol”. It takes a little experience to interpret it, though. Probably not worthwhile to try explaining it to the owners.

Oh, Sally … I have been looking for purple shoes for AGES. Just this week, a friend of mine came out with the purple shoes you showed at the beginning of the post. I just about DIED when I saw them! (Especially because she is my size!) Now I’m looking for something different. I have been eyeing Greta Flora shoes, but so far I’ve only seen one place online where I could buy them. I suppose this is all good, because I have a self-imposed shoe-buying moratorium right now! (Not that it keeps me from thinking about them, obviously …)

      Hi Modern Tanguera
I have to say I tried on those purple shoes myself, and I loved them. There is no question in my mind that some designs of Comme are absolutely stunning, with a delicacy and femininity that cannot be matched – or at least has not been matched, for me, in any other shoe that I have yet seen. This purple shoe with its delicate diagonal ankle strap is to die for.

GretaFloras have a completely different look and feel but I like them – especially the ones with the flower: they have an originality of design that I really rate.
Another friend of mine is the agent for GretaFlora in Canada:
      http://tangospeak.com/

but I don’t know if there is an agent in the USA. Maybe you could… ;)

    Hi Sally,

I clicked on Jantango’s link for Tara Shoes and got the website no problem. The shoes look very comfy and sturdy. However, I don’t buy before trying as I already have a hard time with shoes. I know exactly which Commies will fit well, but I am learning: no suede (stretches too quickly), no satin (gets too dirty), no metalic (rubs off on the straps or where heels meet). Patent and plain leather work best. Neo Tango are slightly wider for me than I like.
Think I need a trip to BA for some dancing and shoes!!!

I thought I’d put on loads of weight when I packed in smoking, but no… maybe it’s the dancing – on Saturday night I actually danced more or less 10 hours from start to finish… or maybe it’s all the walking… I used to be a tubby chica (weighing 2.5 stones more than I do now) in Inglaterra when I drove everywhere – honestly I think the car was a factor, that and my love for my sofa and British TV (in the days before tango) :(

Ah to keep or not to keep all the Commies eh? I know the feeling… oh keep them, KEEP THEM!!!

    OK Sal

now you are really scaring me. Not only do you have me reading about women’s shoes, and checking out your links to their websites. But I’m also talking about them at milonga. It went something like this.

Me, to friend just back from B.A. “Are those new shoes?”

Her, “Yes got them on my trip.”

Me, “Awesome ( isn’t that better than “great”) they look great, (oops) I heard you went to DNI did you get them there?”

Her, “No these aren’t DNI, but these are (showing me another pair). How do you know about DNI?”

Me, “Oh I was reading about them on a blog I follow.”

    Her, “What blog?”

    Me, “Sallycat.”

Her, squealing in a voice so loud I swear the whole milonga froze for a split second.” I LOVE SALLYCAT!!!!!”

She had discovered you just before she went on her trip. She is now reading through all your archives and loving the way you write and the whole thing. She figgers she was in DNI the same day as you and as such “just missed you”. But apparently she didn’t miss your help because she came home with something like 18 pairs of shoes from different shops around BA. Between her and her friend I think they had bought 28 pairs.
I’m not sure when they had time to dance. Anywhoo we went on to chat about colour and padding and heel height and what not………SAL WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO ME????? I used to talk about MANLY things. Like men’s shoes, colour, sole type, suede vs. leather, heel height ballroom Cuban etc etc etc. Now I’ll never be the same…wait a minute… maybe that’s a good thing. :-)

My best to Barbie, keep up the good work. ;-)

Ah well, you may be on to talking women’s shoes for now, but, in honour of you WONDERFUL guys who are so loyal and supportive to me, I am building up to writing about my absolute favourite men’s tango shoes… in C.’s book (and a growing band of my male friends’) there are none better. I have mentioned them already of course, but after two long visits to the store this week, I’m building up to saying a bit more! I hope you will enjoy the story (yet to be written) and maybe one day try the shoes for yourself…

Yep, I absolutely agree with you that GF shoes are wonderful.
I love the designs, the colours of the leathers (rich and deep) and the flowers. The craftmanship is great too – they even get the thumbs up from my friend at 2×4alpie, for whom quality is everything. I tried some once but they just didn’t feel great on my feet. I will try again one day, but sometimes it does seem that what works on one persons feet just doesn’t on anothers.
Two of my friends sell GretaFlora now, one in Canada and one in the UK… so I hope their popularity will spread far and wide.
